Sheep Fire in San Gabriel Mountains

Posted by Mike On October - 4 - 2009

I grew up in Upland… as of 10am this morning (PDT) the sheep fire is 10miles nw of where I used to live. The green line is an approximate track of the progress of the fire since the MODIS satellites first picked up on it…

Yet another Pendleton fire

Posted by Mike On October - 13 - 2008

So another fire on southeast Camp Pendleton has been raging this afternoon (yes, again – just like last week). This one’s at ~1500 acres and is still out of control despite firefighters jumping on it fairly quickly. Good information from area residents resides in the comments of the NCTimes article (as always for us North County folks) – click here. There’s also info being posted on the SD County Emergency Website and on the USMC Website as well.

Pendleton Fire Morning Update

Finally got a bit of a hit on the MODUS MOD14 infrared imaging from NASA…but it only shows some very general information right now (it’s current as of 4am Pacific). The red dots at this point show nothing more than to illustrate the general area of the fire.

The good news is that 70% containment is being reported by the USMC.

From the USMC:
As of 0230
The Golf Course and the riding areas at Camp Pendleton’s Stepp Stables will be closed today, Oct. 9, until further notice.

As of 0120

Firefighting units from Federal, State and local agencies continue to fight the November fire, which originated in Range 401 at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The fire, which started burning in an area southwest of Marine Corps Air Station Camp Pendleton, and initially spread rapidly in a northeastern direction, has slowed considerably on three sides. The change of weather conditions and a shift in the wind direction continue to help firefighting efforts.

At this point, the November fire has burned between 900 to 1,000 acres, and is approximately 70 percent contained.

A small brush fire was reported south of Serra Mesa Housing shortly after 9:00 p.m. Camp Pendleton Fire immediately responded with multiple engines, and that fire was quickly contained. During this time, several homes in Serra Mesa Housing were threatened. However, no damage to housing occurred.

Currently, all roads and gates on Camp Pendleton are open. Power has been restored to all areas of the Base. “

About Me

My name is Mike Barboni though some of you know me as ‘Bonez’ and I’ve been an active technology addict since I was a kid. I’ve long been one of these people that family, friends, and co-workers go to for technology-related advice and consultation and this site is my (vain?) attempt at sharing much of that information for the benefit of others.
